Femoral hernia
All femoral hernias should be repaired as an urgent elective procedure, as they are particularly likely to obstruct and strangulate.
There are three classical approaches:
-
Low (Lockwood)
-
Transinguinal (Lotheissen)
-
High (McEvedy)
Irrespective of approach, the aims are to:
-
Excise the sac.
-
Reduce the contents.
-
Obliterate the femoral ring by suturing the inguinal ligament to the pectineal ligament.
